The mission of TheFraudChronicles.com is to fight fraud with education, understanding, and practical strategies for prevention and detection.


VANESSA OLTMANN founded Vancouver Island University’s Fraud and Ethics Research and Education Centre in 2008 and served as coordinator of the Centre until 2013. During that period she also proposed and coordinated the development of the university’s online Forensic Accounting and Fraud Investigation Advanced Diploma. She taught in the program when it launched in 2012, and served as program coordinator until August 2013 when she retired from a full professorship to pursue research, publishing and training opportunities.

Vanessa served as a director of the Association of Certified Forensic Investigators of Canada’s (ACFI’s) Board of Directors from 2010 to 2013 and as chair of the board’s Education Committee during 2012 and 2013. She is also a content contributor for the ACFI Fraud Manual.

Currently Vanessa maintains The Fraud Chronicles blog where she writes on fraud, corruption, and economic crimes, and maintains a fraud case database. She is currently working on developing a series of educational animated whiteboard-style videos on fraud and corruption.

She continues to serve as adjunct faculty at Vancouver Island University, teaching fraud awareness and detection courses.
